This voyage is reserved for BroadReach Canada's Ships2Shores program. They fund sail training for eligible youth who would otherwise not be able to experience the adventure of sail training, as part of a wider community service and civic engagement program.

Ships2Shores is a fully funded program where youth learn to sail and give back to their communities. Participants will:

The project comprises of two parts: 

Phase 1: Participants engage in fully-funded sail training aboard TS Playfair.

Phase 2: With support from Broad Reach Canada, participants design and carry out a community service project that matters to them.

Who can apply:

  • Youth ages 14-18 

  • Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or holders of refugee status in Canada

  • Equity-deserving youth, including Indigenous, BIPOC, newcomer, language-minority groups, 2SLGBTQ+ and from low-income communities and youth who live in rural or remote areas

  • Interested in adventure-based, hands-on learning

  • Passionate about community involvement and leadership

Trip Description

Set sail from Tobermory to explore some of the North Channel’s hidden gems while learning how to sail and work with your new shipmates. 

Tobermory is home to the Chi-Cheemaun ferry, famous ship-wrecks, and clear waters of the Fathom Five National Marine Park. Expect to sail up to the North Channel to explore remote anchorages, islands, and the welcoming towns of Manitoulin Island. In addition to stunning destinations such as Lake Topaz and Bridal Veil Falls, this area has some of the best sailing grounds in Ontario.

By the end of this voyage, participants will have the skills to take on a significant degree of independence and responsibility in sailing the ship.

This voyage qualifies for the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Bronze, Silver, or Gold Adventurous Journeys or Gold Project.

Please note the folloing:

Cost is per trainee in Canadian dollars ($CAD) and does not include HST. A $400 booking deposit is required at registration.

Course itineraries are approximate and subject to change according to schedule and weather conditions. The route on the map shown is only an example.

For all voyages, participants can either be dropped at the Hamilton office on the day of departure for a shuttle to the vessel or can be dropped directly at the departure port no later than 1pm. The fee to take the shuttle is $50 each way, and can be added during the booking process.
